Serena Williams Steals The Spotlight In Forbes List For Highest-Earning Female Athletes (See Top 10)
23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams, has topped theForbes list for the highest earning female athletes in a list that is dominated by tennis players.
While eight of the top 10 highest earning female athletes are tennis players, the list revealed that Williams earned just $62,000 (£48,050) from prize money during the past year – owing largely to her 14-month break to have a baby – but made $18m (£13.95m) through endorsements.
Williams, who will try to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles when she competes at the US Open in New York, earned twice as much off the court as any other female athlete, according to Forbes.
Dane Caroline Wozniacki, who captured her maiden grand slam title at this year’s Australian Open, was second on the list with combined earnings of £10.1m while reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens £8.7m was third.
Spaniard Garbine Muguruza £8.5m and Russian Maria Sharapova£8.2m rounded out the top five.
Badminton’s PV Sindhu and race car driver Danica Patrick are the only non-tennis players in the top 10.
